Hawshs are the walled family burial yards with spaces for overnight accommodation. They can be single or multiple roomed freestanding structures, roofed with a dome or a shukhshaykha for ventilation and lighting of the inner space.
In other cases, hawshs can be simple walled enclosures where cenotaphs belonging to members of an extended family are grouped together in isolation from the rest of the cemetery grounds. Hawshs can also be surmounted by residential structures.
Hawshs built in wood, stone or brick, differ in their size and façade ornamentation according to the status and social rank of their owners.
